Solar vs gasoline in plain English: what the numbers mean

The figures from our main article, translated into everyday terms. No chemistry degree needed.

Updated October 2026By SolarNiverseCompanion to the full article

Short answer. Yes, solar is much cleaner than burning fuel, but it is not zero.

  • Per unit of electricity, rooftop solar emits roughly 7 to 25 times less carbon than a natural-gas power plant.
  • An electric car running on rooftop solar uses electricity that emits about 2 to 3% of what the average gasoline car's tailpipe does per mile. That compares electricity only with tailpipe only, so read it as a direction, not a lifetime score.
  • The honest weak spots: panel factories that run on coal power, labour risks in supply chains, thin recycling data, and batteries you hardly use.

This page translates the numbers in Is solar really more eco-friendly than gasoline?, where each one has its full source and caveats. Everything here is either a number from that article or a sum made from those numbers, marked calculated. We have no verified source for everyday-object comparisons (trees, appliances, money), so we do not make them.

1. Reading the units

TermIn plain words
g CO2eGrams of carbon dioxide, with other greenhouse gases converted to the same scale. 1,000 g = 1 kg.
kWh (kilowatt-hour)The energy of running a 1,000-watt device for one hour. It is what your electricity bill counts.
"Whole life"Making, shipping, running and retiring something, not only the running.
"Tailpipe only"Just what comes out of the exhaust. Making and shipping the fuel is extra, so whole-life gasoline numbers are higher.
Full dischargeUsing a battery's whole capacity once, from full to empty.

2. What the numbers mean

Number and sourceIn everyday terms
Solar 26 to 60 vs natural-gas power plant 410 to 650 g CO2e per kWh
Source: IPCC AR5 WG III, Annex III
For the same electricity, solar is about 7 to 25 times lower, and about 12 times lower at the median (41 vs 490). calculated
About 400 g CO2 per mile, 4.6 tonnes a year
Source: US EPA
What the average US gasoline car puts out of its tailpipe, driving 11,500 miles a year.
10 to 11 g CO2e per mile for a solar-charged EV's electricity
Source: ICCT energy use × IEA-PVPS solar figure
About 1/36 to 1/41 of the 400 g tailpipe figure. These are different boundaries (electricity only vs tailpipe only), so use it as a direction. calculated
Whole-life EV vs gasoline: 65% to 71% lower on average grids; 83% to 85% lower on 100% renewable power
Source: ICCT 2024, UK DfT
About two-thirds less on an ordinary grid; about five-sixths less on clean power.
EV battery repaid after 11,800 to 15,200 miles
Source: ICCT 2024; EPA mileage
About 1 to 1.3 years of typical driving at 11,500 miles a year. calculated
Panel carbon payback 4 to 8 months; energy payback 0.8 to 1.0 year; 30-year modelled life
Source: IEA, IEA-PVPS
A panel earns back what it cost to make in roughly the first 1 to 3% of its life. The rest is net benefit. calculated
A power station catches up with a gasoline generator after roughly 40 to 140 full discharges
Source: Our arithmetic; inputs in section 4 of the main article
Used about once a week, that is 1 to 3 years. Used twice a year, it is 20 years or more, so for rare emergencies the carbon argument is weak either way. calculated
742 deaths in 579 incidents from portable generators, 2012 to 2022
Source: US CPSC
Carbon monoxide is the stronger reason to keep generators away from living spaces. It is a safety point, not a carbon one. Counts for 2021 and 2022 are incomplete.

3. Which reader are you?

  • Thinking about rooftop solar: the first and sixth rows matter most. Put your own numbers in the state solar calculators.
  • Thinking about an electric car: the rows on tailpipe emissions, whole-life savings and battery payback.
  • Buying backup power: the last two rows, then how to choose a portable power station.

4. What to take with you

  • Solar is far cleaner per kWh than burning fuel, not "zero".
  • The honest weak spots are coal-powered factories, labour risks, thin recycling data and rarely used batteries.
  • Where it can lose: a rarely used portable power station against a gasoline generator.

Every figure above has its full context in the main article, including what is not published.

Quick answers

What does g CO2e per kWh mean?

The grams of greenhouse gas, counted as carbon dioxide, released for each kilowatt-hour of electricity. A kilowatt-hour is the energy of running a 1,000-watt device for one hour.

Is solar electricity really cleaner than other power?

Per kWh, whole-life rooftop solar emits about 7 to 25 times less than a natural-gas power plant (IPCC), but it is not zero.

Is a solar power station always greener than a gasoline generator?

No. If it is used rarely, the carbon argument is weak either way. By our arithmetic it takes roughly 40 to 140 full discharges to catch up.
